Karunya Community Pharmacy
Kerala Medical Services Corporation Ltd
started its first Karunya Community Pharmacy at Medical College,
Thiurvananthapuram on January, 2012 with objective to provide the public,
branded medicines at affordable price. As per G.O. No. 186/2012/H&FWD dtd
19/06/2012, more Karunya Community Pharmacies were opened, at government
health facilities like medical colleges, general hospitals, district hospitals
etc., and now there are 70 Karunya Community Pharmacies and 6 Karunya Medicne
Depots, throughout Kerala; including the pharmacies at Sabarimala operated
during Makaravilakku festival.
Karunya Community Pharmacies distribute
medicines at a discounted rate of 10% -93% from maximum retail price (MRP). At
present, being a major player in the pharma business in Kerala; Karunya
Community Pharmacies could curb the exploitation of middle-men and private
medical shops; and thus control the market price of medicines to a certain
extent.
