KANIV 108 AMBULANCE PROJECT

The project called “KANIV-108” (Kerala Ambulance Network for Injured Victims) has been envisaged  as a part of Trauma care in order save the precious life which is being lost in the road accidents. The 315 BLS ambulances has been deployed in a manner that the black spots of Kerala where frequents accidents happens can be reached in a minimal time by the KANIV-108 ambulances. The vehicles has been divided into two categories 12 hour servicing vehicles and 24 hour servicing vehicles. The time between 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM when the maximum number of accidents happens all the 315 ambulances will be in service and during 8:00PM to 8:00 AM only 150 ambulances will be in service.

Besides road accidents pregnant women, stroke patients, Heart patients and all type of medical emergencies are attended including the service during disasters. For the effective service these vehicles have Oxygen cylinders, Suction Pumps, Pulse Oxymeter, Nebuliser, BP Apparatus, Scoop Structure, Cervical Coller, Spine board these equipments are available in the ambulances. All the services are done under the supervision of a trained EMT (Emergency medical Technician).

The project is operated by M/s GVK EMRI which has been selected through an e tender process and agreement has been signed for a period of 5 years in which the agreement has to be renewed at the end of each year based on annual performance appraisal. As per the agreement M/s GVK EMRI has to source the vehicle set up the control room at Technopark recruit employees has to bear fuel expense, maintenance of vehicles, salary of employees etc KMSCL will be paying a consolidated amount for running an ambulance per month from this amount M/s GVK EMRI has to meet all the expenses related to the operation of the ambulances.

All the ambulances are fitted with GPS devices and controlled by the control room situated at Technopark Thiruvananthapuram. Trained Emergency technicians sitting at Technopark control room will collect information’s from the caller and identify the nearest free ambulance and direct the ambulance to the caller. EMT after examining the patient will take the patient to the nearby hospital based on the seriousness of the patient. All district there is a district level committee with district collector as chairmen and the members include Superintendent of police, District Medical officer, District Programme Manager, and Regional transport Officer and a State Level committee with Health Secretary as Chairman and Director of Health and Director of Medical Education as members. All the vehicles are displayed with a toll-free number (18005992270) to address the grievance of the users of the ambulances.

The first phase of the operation of the ambulances with 101 vehicles has been done by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala on 25th September 2019 at Thiruvananthapuram. And second phase has been inaugurated by the Hon’ble Health Minister on 21/10/2019 at Kannur with 100 vehicles.

The KANIV-108 ambulances has done an appreciable service during the natural disaster happened in Pettimudi. These ambulances were instrumental in the service done at Karripur airport during the plane crash, 46 KANIV-108 ambulances were rushed to Karippur  from Kozhikkode  and  Malappuram, districts. The vehicles have transported 36 injured passengers to hospital giving medical aid. 96 employees of KANIV-108 employees has participated in the rescue mission.
